It is my extreme pleasure to present the Silver Quill award to Frank and Emily McTighe.  A recognition that is long overdue!

After completing journalism school, Frank started as sports editor at the Taber Times in 1982 and continued his journey in the community newspaper business at Vauxhall Advance, Coaldale Sunny South News, and High River Times in the position of editor.

In October of 1989 Frank and his wife, Emily purchased and operated the Nanton News for 6 years. After selling the Nanton News to Westmount Press, Frank continued as publisher and editor of the Nanton News and High River Times until September of 2000.  Emily continued to work by his side in capacity of advertising sales and production manager at the Vulcan Advocate and High River Times, and I had the distinct pleasure of working with Emily when she joined the staff of the Claresholm Local Press in 1999.  Frank then took a position of full time journalism instructor at SAIT for the 2000/2001 school year and again as part time instructor from 2002 to 2006.

Frank has also served in many capacities in our industry organizations at the provincial and national level. He served as director on the AWNA board from 1992 to 1998 in various positions and committees, and was president of the AWNA in 1997 - 1998. He served as director with the CCNA from 2004 to 2011. Again serving in various capacities and committees including second vice-president. Having served on the board with Frank, I know that his opinion, knowledge, integrity and input has been invaluable to the community newspaper industry.

In September 2001 Frank and Emily purchased the Fort Macleod Gazette, the oldest newspaper in Alberta. And they continue to operate it to this day.

The biggest thing that stands out in my mind is their commitment to journalism excellence in serving their readers and community. Together they have won countless provincial and national awards including best overall newspaper in the province and in the country.

The other thing that stands out – is how well they have worked together as a team for over 30 years! An amazing feat in itself – but we all know that behind every good man is an outstanding woman! But seriously the two of you working together and achieving what you have achieved is an inspiration to me and I am sure to many others in the industry.

It is my pleasure to present you with the Silver Quill Award.
