Steve Dills
Respect among peers is never granted but always earned. It is most often earned by those who do not consciously seek it. Steve Dills' selfless effort on behalf of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association has earned him that respect. His ideas and accomplishments have enhanced the growth and development of the AWNA in its mission to serve members and associates.
The list of Steve's AWNA involvements is lengthy since he first became involved in 1979 while working at the Onoway Tribune. Steve served on the AWNA Board from 1985 to 1990 and was president in 1988-89. During that time Steve served as Chairman of the Advertising Committee, the Convention Committee, the Membership Committee, the Newspaper Symposium and as the Golf Tournament host.
Perhaps Steve's greatest accomplishment for AWNA was his vision to hold an annual Newspaper Symposium to offer quality education and upgrading to all staff members of AWNA newspapers. The opportunity to share camaraderie, experience, and information by way of the symposium has been a great asset to hundreds of staff since its inception in 1991.
Steve also dedicated much time and effort in the early stages of developing the demographics base for AWNA's GIS program, a program which is now being adopted by all community newspaper associations across the country. Steve's willingness to help others in his profession or in his community will be remembered for a long time.
For all the things you have done in our great profession, we salute you! Thank you, Steve.
