Bill Draayer Award 1984
Given in recognition of outstanding personal contributions to the progress and development of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.
Jack Gieg
Through a continuing contribution of unselfish service to the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, Jack Gieg has demonstrated a consuming personal interest in the well-being of this Association. He has also provided distinguished leadership in the offices of President in 1975–76, as a member of the Board of Directors and as Chairman and continuing member of the Advertising Committee.
Keenly interested in the effective promotion of weekly newspapers, he was responsible for introducing and producing an all-member rate card Data Book. He personally provided the first One Order-One Bill advertising service for a major client on behalf of AWNA; he initiated the revival of the Fire Prevention Week promotion including the advertising and editorial kits so widely used by AWNA members and recognized as a major contribution to public education by both the National Fire Protection Association and the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.
Jack Gieg represented AWNA on the Alberta Agriculture Week Committee for four years – two as chairman. In co-operation with the Alberta Department of Agriculture he developed the print promotion package that has served Alberta's agriculture industry so well.
Not least of his service has been a constant interest and assistance at Central Office in an official and unofficial capacity. His calm assurance, sound advice, frequent visits and constant availability has helped Central Office to function smoothly from its beginning.
